This year marks the biggest Yeti Snowshoe Series in Canada to date since its inception in 2001. Good news for friends on the west coast. The snow has arrived just in time for the season’s opening weekend. Whether a beginner or expert, The Yeti will challenge your snowshoeing ability and to take your passion for the outdoors to the trails. Alongside only a few hundred fellow outdoor enthusiasts and of course the token abominable snowman, The Yeti Snowshoe Series is one of a kind.
Designed by 5Peaks trail running gurus, course options cater to everyone of all levels and abilities. The sport (5 to 6K) or enduro (10Km) are clearly marked, semi-packed trails with a gradual incline. The 2014 Race Director Solana Klassen describes the series as fun and appealing to all. Unlike many competitive races, you can even walk it. The Yeti vibe is truly about enjoying the outdoors with no pressure. Atlas Snowshoe rentals are available onsite if needed.
The beauty of snowshoeing is that it is truly a family friendly sport. Bring your entire family and enter your mini me’s into the free 1km kids race. If you are new to the sport of snow running, be sure to try out a run snowshoe model before the event. Much lighter than recreational snowshoes, run snowshoes are best worn with a traditional running shoe.
Watch The Yeti Facebook Page for upcoming pre-race clinics, a chance to get some training and social time in before your race date(s). Food, coffee and prizes await at the finish line. The more the merrier, so invite your friends to participate with you. A few tips for newbies: don’t overdress, cross train on the trails or your bike pre-race and don’t kill it out of the gate. Slow but steady wins the race.
Strap on your snowshoes and try something new this season. Warning: Snowshoe running is growing in popularity and highly addictive.
Online registration closes on the Thursday night at midnight before each event. Register here!
